Digital 2D Animation28 April 2016 //
Making animations that are 2 dimensional digitally is known as digital 2D animation. You don’t have to create any models (as opposed to 3D animation, which you need 3D models for), you just need to draw the frames. 25 April 2016 // Making a lot of drawings and putting them together to show some kind of movement is simply known as digital 2D animation. Some people use the application Adobe Flash, where they can limit the number of frames drawn which makes it simpler to make. Minor variations such as changes of color or frame rate can be adjusted almost instantly, which makes it easier for the animators to work on their projects. Making cel animation uses sheets made of plastic called cels. Each frame or picture is drawn on the cel. Cels is short for celluloid. Celluloid is the type of plastic a cel is made of. Using cels saves a lot of time, as the animators can draw the background and lay the different frames. The animators will use a stop-motion camera and take pictures of each frame. Cel animation was the traditional way to create digital 2D animation. The show “SpongeBob SquarePants” uses cel animation to create the show. Source: “Traditional Animation.” BrainPOP . Stopmotion28 April 2016 //
Stop motion is a form of animation in which you take a photo of an object and move it slightly, then take another photo. There are many types of stop motion animation such as; claymation (which is stop motion animation where you use clay as models), puppets (which is stopmotion using puppets and marionettes), cut outs (in which you cutting out pieces of paper, putting them together and taking pictures), silhouettes (in which you do the same thing as in cut outs but with all black paper to resemble silhouettes), action figures/ lego (which is very popular on YouTube. You use action figures/ lego figures as models), and pixelation (in which you take pictures of real life in stop motion). Stop motion was commonly used for special effects before CGI (3D) animation came about. Another technique, which people started using in the 80's was called 'Go motion' in which they programmed a computer to move the models before they took a photograph of the next frame. It was difficult but it produced more realistic-looking movements. The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) and Wallace and Gromit (2005) are examples of successful stop motion products. Digital 3D Animation Digital 3D animation is also referred as CGI (Computer-generated imagery) animation, as the animator generates the images by graphics made by the computer/software. In 3D animation, the animator moves each body part that has special controls. After that, the animator will set a keyframe when the body parts are in the correct position. The computer calculates the animation of each body part. Hence, 3D animation is the most common form of animation.

Traditional animation is the older form of all the animation types. It is also referred as "cel animation". The animator draws each frame for the sequence of the particular animation. Traditional animation is also used in the old days of Disney, now Digital 3D animation. Source: “Traditional Animation.” BrainPOP . BrainPOP, n.d. 1877 - Émile Reynaud invented "The Praxinoscope". The invention of the Praxinoscope brought a great leap forward for animation. Because of Reynaud's invention, he allowed longer animations to be shown to the public. 1895 - The Lumiére brothers had developed a camera called a cine camera. It uses a sequence of photographs that are on long strips of film. With this invention, cartoon makers could save time by taking photos of different pictures at a time, on film. Then, they play the sequence at a particular pace or speed to create animation. Early 20th century - Using animation, some animators have begun to show weird and wonderful things on film. A French person named George Méliès was the first film maker to use stop motion. The early animators have created cartoons alone and it was very time-consuming to do those work. Feature-length animated films were demanded and it kept growing. Because of that, saving time making them was what the animators wanted. 1910 - A man named Ladislas Starevich created a stop-motion film. The film is about a beetle called Leukanida and two male suitors. He filmed his stop-motion film using dead beetles. Even if it consists of dead- beetles, the animation made the beetles look so lifelike that journalists claimed that Starevich had trained the beetles in order to make the film. 1915 - Animation was very time-consuming and fortunately, a person named J.R. Bray has came up with an idea of cels. Cels are short for celluloid, and is a transparent sheet of plastic. 1930s - They formed animation studios to divide work between people who have different skills and roles. More studios were set up in the 1930s, including Walt Disney Studio and Warner Bros. Lots of animated films were made. 1950s-1960s - Televisions became widespread and trending, and for the first time, people could see animation in their homes. At the beginning of the 21st century - People could now see animation in different types of screens, from mobile phones and laptops to advertising boards on buildings and sports grounds. Advantages: - Easily understood; animation can be understood by people with poor verbal or linguistic skills or literacy or people who are foreign to the language of the animation. - People could understand what information the animation gives with few texts and sound. - Companies could use animation to give a certain message to the audience; it can be custom-made for companies to give slogans or messages to viewers. - Can convey information in a fun way; listening to a speech can be boring for some people but hearing and seeing information through animation is fun and not boring. |
6 May 2016 //
Disadvantages: - Animators working in companies can work for hours; some animators' schedules can surpass 50 hours. They could take a break. - It takes effort to create a simple animation; everyone has different skills. Some people are slow in learning and vice versa. But it takes a lot of effort to make an animation. - Very expensive and time-consuming; it takes a lot of time to create animations. It could take days to make a short animation but it could take months to make a season (of a TV show) of animation. - It is distracting for viewers; people could be distracted by the graphics and can't learn the information given in the animation. - |
